Early look: Who to expect in Santa Anita's Goodwood Stakes

Eleven horses were nominated for next Saturday's Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita, a win-and-you're-in for the Breeders' Cup Classic to be run at 1 1/8 miles.

Santa Anita stakes coordinator James Kasparoff reviewed the nominations with Horse Racing Nation to see how the race is shaping up.

Arrowthegreat. This 5-year-old gelding by Arrogate is coming off a win in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs. Kasparoff thinks he's possible for the Goodwood, with the one-mile Tokyo City Cup Stakes on Oct. 25 also a possibility.

Dr. Venkman. The 5-year-old Ghostzapper gelding won the Pat O'Brien (G2) last out. He also is nominated for the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1), and Kasparoff said he's possible for either one.

Express Train. This would be the third start off a layoff for the son of Union Rags, and he was third last out in the Pat O'Brien. Kasparoff lists him as probable for the Goodwood.

First Mission. Second last out as the favorite in the Philip H. Iselin (G2), he won the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in April. Kasparoff expects Brad Cox will ship him to California for the first time to try the Goodwood.

Full Serrano. Now 6, he's had one start since winning the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile last year, easily winning an optional-claiming allowance at Del Mar on Sept 1. Noting that he breezed five furlongs for trainer John Sadler on Sunday, Kasparoff said he's a probable for the Goodwood.

Gaming, Nevada Beach, Privman. These three Bob Baffert nominations all are possible for the Goodwood. Kasparoff said he expects Baffert will enter two, though he could go with all three. Baffert also nominated Goal Oriented, but he's at Parx for the Pennsylania Derby (G1).

Indispensable. Also nominated by Sadler, the 4-year-old Constitution colt finished fourth last out in the Pacific Classic (G1), and Kasparoff expects him to be entered here.

Midnight Mammoth. He returned from a break to finish sixth in the Pacific Classic for trainer Craig Dollase. "He's in for sure," Kasparoff said.
