John Sadler likes what he sees in Drayden Van Dyke, the meet’s leading apprentice rider. “I like the way he was taught,” the trainer said. “He has a good teacher in Tom Proctor. He’s ‘old school.’”

John Sadler said the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 15 “is what we’re looking at right now” for San Vicente Stakes winner Kobe’s Back, while Sham Stakes runner-up Kristo is ticketed for the Grade II San Felipe Stakes on March 8. Sadler, meanwhile is on a roll. According to Santa Anita’s crack statistician Jason Hom, Sadler has won with 10 of 22 starters from Feb. 8 through Monday, five of them stakes, for a 45.54 win percentage. His in-the-money percentage during that span is 68.18 percent. “The last two weeks have been super,” Sadler said. “We’ve been really fortunate. Things have gone our way, so we’re very happy, but we’ve got a long way to go this meet (June 29). You don’t want to get too excited too soon.”

John Sadler is likely to pass next Sunday’s Grade II La Canada stakes with Iotapa in favor of the Grade II Santa Monica Stakes at seven furlongs on Jan. 25. “She’s been out since Del Mar (July 21),” Sadler said. “We nominated her to the La Canada for 4-year-old fillies but we’re probably leaning towards the Santa Monica. I want to keep my options open. Demonic will probably not make the Strub. He’s going to work early this week. He’s nominated, but he’ll probably be ready right after that.”

John W. Sadler trained Stardust Dancer probably for his last race at Santa Anita. Stardust Dancer was saved from killer buyers at a horse auction last week purchased by Horse Plus Humane Society. This was just 25 days after his last race. What kind of trainer does this to a horse. The owners were Cecil and Gary Barnes. Did they ask Sadler to dump Stardust Dancer? Or did the trainer dump this racehorse. All three of these people should be ashamed of their treatment of Stardust Dancer
