Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who suffered multiple injuries in a riding mishap on May 10, was a visitor at Clockers’ Corner Thursday morning, looking fit enough to resume his career, which he is expected to do when Del Mar opens July 17. “He presently is in therapy for a week and a half and is scheduled to ride at Del Mar opening day,” said his agent, Joe Ferrer. “A few days before Del Mar I’ll start exercising and working horses,” said Bejarano, the perennial leader on the Southern California circuit, who won Santa Anita’s Winter Meet title in runaway fashion with 93 victories.

Rafael Bejarano is recovering from multiple injuries suffered in a riding mishap on May 10 and could resume riding next month. “He’s seeing his doctor on June 24 and he should start rehabbing the next day,” his agent, Joe Ferrer, said Sunday morning. “I would say he’ll definitely be riding before Del Mar (opens on July 17), but I don’t know how long before Del Mar.”

With the recent injury of Rafael Bejarano, the top jocks in the country all seemed to have a hospital visit in common. John Velazquez had his spleen removed after a 2nd visit to the hospital; Ramon Dominguez, unfortunately, had to retire from injuries sustained; Joel Rosario took a leave of absence last year because of injuries. Seems the jockeys of yesteryear overcame this series of problems. The great ones: Willie Shoemaker, Eddie Arcaro, Bill Hartack, and more recently, Pat Day, Jerry Bailey, Chris McCarron, Angel Cordero, and Gary Stevens(with the Arlington Million day mishap being the exception). Would it be that the horses today, are more unfit? Or, maybe the jockeys are less fit? And, whatever happened to Garrett Gomez? Seems like the longevity of jockeys could be in serious jeopardy.

Peppermint Paddy · Time to leave an update on Rafael here amongst all these debates. 2 broken shoulder blades, broken collar bone, 4 broken ribs and a surgical drain to drain the blood which was origianlly not reported via tweets or whatever by his agent. Either already released or very soon to be. Wishing Rafael a speedy recovery. I literally hit the ground when watching this spill take place. RIP Gameboy Luke, and condolences to all the connections. travel_vic · with ALL fractures it is a matter of degreee, amount of displacement and/or the need of internal fixation. THese bones are not anything major but their approiximation to the lungs really complicates chest trauma. · 4145 days ago
