Julien Leparoux, winner of the past five Keeneland riding titles, was making the rounds Thursday morning after returning to Lexington from his new base in Southern California. Leparoux has four mounts on Friday’s opening-day card, including Pyrite Mountain in the Transylvania (G3), a race Leparoux has won twice. Leparoux has won nine titles overall at Keeneland, eight of them outright.

As expected, several horse racing personalities were on hand for Monday’s wedding of Julien Leparoux and Shea Mitchell. Jockeys in attendance included Joe Talamo, Aaron Gryder, Garrett Gomez, Rajiv Maragh, Tyler Baze and John Velasquez. Mike and Denise Mitchell, parents of the bride, also welcomed trainers John Shirreffs, Phil D’Amato and Hector Palma. Leparoux’s previous agent in Kentucky, Steve Bass, was there along with his current agent Joe Ferrer and other jockey agents Scotty McClellan (Talamo), Craig O’Bryan (Baze, Mario Gutierrez), and Tony Matos (Gomez).

Funny quote from Leparoux after the Preakness in which he ran Daddy Nose Best to a disapointing 9th place finish. "He had a little jump out of the gate. After that, he had a tough, tough race." Hmmm. Sounds familiar to 2 weeks ago, Gee Julien I think maybe I would try doing things differently then. Michael Matz better make a jockey change on Union Rags, it is becoming glaringly obvious Leparoux has trouble with the big races.

Buckpasser · Funny how that happens with JLs horses. I like DNB, but dropped him when JL was riding. JL reminds of the part in the movie Seabiscuit where Pollard and Woolfe are kidding around. Watched his race before the derby, IMO he kept his horse way too far back, this worried me coming into the derby, anybody else notice this?

gelded1 · It also didn't help that the #1 horse Daddy Long Legs came out of the gate as good as he did or Rags may have been able to shoot through on the rail early in the race and saved some ground.Later he had to check for a tiring DADDY Long Legs causing Union Rags even more problems. · 4885 days ago

I agree Rags isnt Zenyatta and he's no Mike Smith so nix the back of the pack stuff ! He got himself very poorly positioned and couldnt recover from it ! The horse did very well under the circumstances ...let us look forward now not backward ...another jockey might help ???

With the original top choices out this coudld be a very open race. Anyoone's race to win. The blood lines are there for Derby Kitten, being Joy Kitten, Northern dancer, Buck Passer and Hail to reason all top horse.The breding i very evident. Stamina, distance, with the horse coming along nicely for the big one. Don't overlook. i expect a stretch duel between Derby Kitten and Pants on fire with Derby Kitten get up in time.
